Separation of Church and Mental State (Center City Methodist Church, Center City, Texas, Population: 15)

I’m a plant guy now, it’s my favorite kinda art (also thank you @mariellguzman for being my plant partner)

Separation of Church and Mental State (Center City Methodist Church) 2025
This has been a looooong time coming. This piece is part of an ongoing series I started in 2021.
I grew in what was a small town (now a classic Texas suburb) that was a solid Bible thumping kinda town. While I don’t consider myself religious (and a lot of that has to do with growing up there), I always found the tension between the community of a small town and the church striking. On one hand, if you are religious, it’s a beautiful thing. The only time a small town truly gets together as a community on a regular basis is Sunday morning. But, if you’re not religious, suddenly it isn’t just your Sunday mornings your left out of. Instead, you become essentially excommunicated from a community with Christianity at its center.
That’s where a lot of my art comes from, growing in a place where god was the pillar and if you weren’t in it then you certainly weren’t apart of it. I saw the world as an outsider, noticing the surrealism and absurdity of believing.
For this series, I’ve driven around the backroads of Texas, searching for towns with less than 3,000 people living in it. Every single one had at least one church. No other religious places. After printing the photo, I place it into an original Thomas Kincaid frame and split the whole thing in half. Kincaid to me representa not only the pinnacle of kitsch, but a core foundation in American conservative Christianity, a man forgetting the morals of art in pursuit of global domination and wealth.
It’s one of those pieces I don’t feel like I need to explain too much, because those that grew up like me know it when they see it.

Yammer (2021)
I made these beauties 4 years ago and had the incredible opportunity to sell them to @capitalone for their lounge at DFW Airport (terminal D for y’all that got the cards). Earlier this year, the original two pieces were damaged so they asked me to remake them. They’re two of my largest pieces (30” diameter each) and I never got to take proper pics of the originals so it was nice getting these back in my hands.
It took a lot more work than I anticipated (and like some really expensive mistakes) but now they’re back and stronger than ever!!
Shoutout to @tappancollective for arranging all of the logistics, and @coupralux for making these prints and cuts look so stunning.

Yesterday, we had to put down one of the most beautiful creatures to ever cross my path.
Lola was a saint, and I mean that. If there’s a heaven she’s got a fast pass through the gates, and if there isn’t one, they’re gonna make one for her.
Her ears, her wet nose, her big old paws, her thick neck and bushy tail made her stunning, but it was her gratefulness, patience, and the purest form of love I’ll ever find that made me fall so deeply in love with her.
She meant a lot to me and whole hell of a lot more to mariell and her family. I’m so happy I got to have her for the last years of her life. I hope she knows I did my best for her.
I love you Lola. 13 years is a long time and just not long enough. May you chase squirrels and eat everything your heart desires from here on out.

Listen, you give this girl a wall and tell her to paint a mural of a mussel? She’s gonna tear that wall up

This is more a reminder to myself, we don’t gotta accomplish things every day. Rest is important too.
